Buying and selling a home is an exciting experience. But it can also be stressful. The process is easier with a good real estate agent on your side who will help you navigate buying and selling for the best price.

But with so many brokerages and agents across Canada, finding the right one can be a daunting task. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right real estate agent.

Meet with several real estate agents before you decide

Many people ask friends and family for recommendations. That’s a good place to start. Yet, you also shouldn’t just take their word for it.

It’s best if you interview a few potential candidates before deciding. During this interview you can ask some questions about their experience and work style and also gauge each agent’s professionalism.

It’s also a good idea to make sure you choose an agent who is a good talker and negotiator. After all, this person will be trying to get you the best deal possible!

Feel free to ask each agent for a couple of references. They should be able to provide these without any hesitation. Speaking to their past clients will give you some great insight.

Before you decide, email, call or text each of your candidates. In the fast-paced real estate industry, you need an agent who will get back to you quickly.

But when that’s all said and done, the right agent for you is more about fit than credentials.

Find someone who you mesh well with

You will be working closely with your real estate agent so it’s important to align yourself with someone that is relatable and that you enjoy chatting with.

You need to find someone will listen to what you want and who you trust so that when he or she gives you advice, you feel comfortable taking it.

Hire an expert on the local real estate market

The best real estate agent in a different city likely isn’t going to be a good choice for you. Your agent needs to be an expert in your local market in order to get you the best deal. If you are selling, they need to be confident about their recommended list price.

If you are moving to a new area, an agent that is an expert on the neighbourhood is vital. You’ll have questions about the local schools, the average home list and sale prices and the nearby parks and amenities.

Pick a realtor who is tech savvy

An agent who isn’t actively using the latest technology is missing opportunities to get his or her clients the best results. These days, buyers begin their house-buying search online. Check out your prospective agent’s listings on MLS. Are the properties attractive and well put together?

What about social media? Does your agent use various platforms to market their clients’ properties?

Find out if your agent uses online documents that you can sign electronically. This will save you valuable time and a trip to your agents’ office.

Final thoughts

At the end of the day, once you’ve done your research and asked the important questions, trust your gut. Keep in mind that the perfect agent for someone else may not be the right fit for you.

Choose an agent that you trust to be honest and have your best interest at heart.
